Trigonometry -- labeling the sides of the triangle

Labeling a triangle is a basic but important part of learning trigonometry.
This page will show you multiple choice questions so you can practise this skill.

A right angled triangle always has a hypotenuse.
It is the longest side and it is opposite the biggest angle (the right angle).


Before we can talk about an opposite or an adjacent in a right angled triangle, we need to pick an angle to talk about.
If we know the size of the angle, we can refer to it by size.
We don't know the size of the angles in the triangle below, so I have chosen an angle by drawing an arc.

The arrow points at the side which does not touch the angle. This side is opposite the angle, so we call it the opposite

While, in the next triangle, the arrow points at the side which is next to the angle (but is not the longest side).
Because it is next to the angle, we call this side the adjacent.
